PAST PROJECTS

What's it all about?

We're thrilled to highlight our progress we've made, since our early days back in 2017.  Much of that success is directly attributable to our collaborative spirit working in tandem with our awesome Partners and our volunteers.

Discover our Reach Out Projects.  Take a look our past sessions such as crafts, mindfulness, dance workshops, The Proper Blokes Club, Dementia Memory Hub & much more.  This is just a brief snapshot of some of the lovely sessions we have held for our community.

Our Reach Out sessions

We were lucky enough to find a volunteer GP who led 20 minute free consultations to our community.  The event was fully booked and proved to be very popular.    These sessions worked well, alongside our fully funded podiatry sessions.

A busy day at our Tropical Event working in partnership with Avenue's Group 'It takes 2' which aimed to connect 100 people with learning disabilities with 100 people from the local community to share experiences.  The event was packed with our local Nepalese community enjoying the day

Mycenae House on-site Bo-Peep Nursery go into Care Homes to visit Residents

Mycenae Reach Out and our very own on site Bo-Peeps nursery took the little un's into a local care home.  It’s was a vibrant and happy environment for both the residents and little un's who met, sung and played games with residents.  Some residents may not have relatives locally or any family at all so we are thrilled about this wonderful project with Bo-Peeps Nursery and Tudor Grange Care Home.

'Everybody Sing' Inclusive Singing group  - aimed at those with learning disabilities and family/friends/supporters & carers.

The Mycenae Reach Out Project collaborated with the amazing and talented Emma Bond, Creative Director and Founder of Nightingale Music CIC, Woolwich_Musicspace to provide a singing group for those with learning disasbilities. It was fully funded by Nightingale Music CIC so the sessions were free for participants.   The group has now disbanded.

Having a Digital Disaster? We held 'Techy Time' sessions and 'Help with your Gadget'

We ran help classroom style , digital knowledge sessions for getting to grips with your smartphone, laptop & other gadgets with Paul Clayton from Comfortably Digital CIC.   Since these have ended, Jon, our volunteer, now leads free one to one 'help with your gadget' session, on a one-to-one every Thursday 1-3pm.

Techy Time sessions were generously funded by Royal Borough of Greenwich

Time 2 Shine Sports Club (Disabilities) - Especially aimed at those with disabilities.

Mycenae Reach Out collaborated with South London Special League and GLL Get Active to provide an inclusive sports club aimed at those with disabilities. Community members got together to have a go at Multi-sports, Boccia, Seated exercise, parachute and sticky targets.

The John Roan School and The Reach Out Project unite to offer Intergenerational Projects

We've  had the pleasure of working closely with The John Roan School on some amazing intergenerational projects. In 2019 the pupils were given training by Mycenae House, Dementia Champion, Carol Foyle with a visit to Leah Lodge to meet residents with advanced dementia. The pupils have also met our knitting nanas and granpas' and had some fun learning to knit and sharing their new skills with their families. The School were entered into The Goldsmith's Regional Finals for their dedication to outstanding community initiatives.

The very popular Inclusive Daytime Disco  - was aimed at those with disabilities and their carers/supporters/family & friends.

We noticed there were little community social get togethers in the area for those who have disabilities.  The disco gave people a chance to get together, throw some squares and make new friends with some funky DJ’s adding to the mix.  We also held an inclusive Valentine's Day disco.

Cabaret Clubs for Seniors

Deborah, The Manager of The Reach Out Project wanted to offer something a little different and exciting for our senior Community and so the Cabaret Club for seniors was born in 2019.  We held 4 cabaret clubs to gauge interest. We were astounded by the popularity and each club was packed to the rafters and the events just 'rocked'!

We had amazing performers from the iconic London’s own Royal Albert Hall (Albert’s Band), vintage dancing from Swing Patrol, Kate and Satoshi (incredible pianist and an opera singer), Dave Silk and his ensemble with some relaxing lazy, classy jazz, Gordon Dann with memorable rat pack music and Green Chain Quartet with some classic cool 60’s music, soul-jazz and boogaloo.

The atmosphere was amazing with seniors rocking their frocks and singing and clapping their way through the shows.  The turnout was amazing with over 100 people at each event. Even on the hottest day of the year community members still turned out.

Training Younger Folk to Become Dementia Friends

We were fortunate enough to work with Carol Foyle, our Dementia Champion, who trained school pupils from The John Roan School to become Dementia Friends.

Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help. From telling friends about the Dementia Friends programme to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts.

Drop in Cafe for Seniors - Knitting Nanas and Granpas - Our early meetings of the "Knitting Nanas and Granpa's,"  defied the stereotypical image of quiet, nodding seniors. Knitting needles clicked a rapid-fire rhythm as lively banter was engaged in, punctuated by bursts of laughter, the occasional swear word and rude jokes over dropped stitches. The Knitting Nanas and Granpa's were a vibrant and thoroughly entertaining bunch.

Knitting projects took place with scarves knitted for the homeless, poppies for the Royal British Legion, Forget me not flowers for for Alzeheimers.  We are starting soon a new 'Loneliness Hurts' flat dolly campaign for 2025 with local Care Homes.

Back in the day at the Drop in Cafe, guerrilla gran's and granpa’s weaved their woolly magic and yarn bombed railings with blue handmade ‘forget me nots’ local to Mycenae House for Dementia Action week.

Local Legends of SE3

How wonderful to have Steven Emerson a former stuntman who worked with Alfred Hitchcock, Liza Minelli and Michael Caine reminiscing and recording memories with The John Roan School pupils. Steven worked on Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The Da Vinci Code, EastEnders (Queen Vic fire), Shaun of the Dead and lots of other films.  Also Mr Alan L. Williams, Former MP for Havering Hornchurch recording his memories of wartime and politics

What fascinating lives these gentlemen have lived. Both gentlemen are in their 80’s and their memories are incredible. A true inspiration to the younger generation.

We would also like to mention 'our Phyllis and our Corinne' both long standing community members who had long links with Mycenae House over many years.  Sadly we lost both and they are not forgotten.  Rest in peace.
